New York Road Runners Celebrates Year-Round Presence in “The World’s Borough” with Largest-Ever Citizens Queens 10K

Citizens serves as race’s first-ever title sponsor

Nonprofit New York Road Runners (NYRR)celebrated its year-round presence in “The World’s Borough” with a record-number 12,094 finishers Saturday at the sold-out Citizens Queens 10K.

As a New York Citybased nonprofit that builds healthier lives and stronger communities through the transformative power of running, NYRR has made its programs accessible to the diverse Queens community for more than two decades. The Citizens Queens 10K is the nonprofit’s marquee event in the borough and one of 60 adult and youth races it produces annually.

Part of the NYRR Five Borough Series, the Citizens Queens 10K has taken place since 2012, evolving from what used to be the Queens Half Marathon, first held in 1994. The race took place in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, starting and finishing near the Fountain of the Planets and giving runners spectacular views of the Unisphere, Citi Field, and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Citizens became the Official Bank of NYRR last September and as part of its five-year Foundation-level partnership served as the first-ever title sponsorof the Queens 10K.

At this year’s Citizens Queens 10K, an elevated youth event, the Flushing Meadows Kids Run, drew more than 700 kids ages 2–18 from across New York City. The free youth race offered a medal for the first time.

The event also featured the first-ever Citizens Queens 10K post-race festivalfor runners and the local Queens community with live music, family-friendly activities, and food from local vendors participating in the Queens Night Market.
